Patna, 14 Jan 2025 (ANN): The Bihar agriculture department has taken a significant step toward modernising farming by introducing drone technology. In an exhibition held at Krishi Bhavan on Tuesday, it showcased the use of drones in agriculture. The event drew over 100 progressive farmers from Patna, Siwan, Saran, Bhojpur, Vaishali, and Nalanda, along with 100 Jeevika Didis from self-help groups.
Bihar’s Agriculture minister Mangal Pandey lauded the initiative, crediting PM Narendra Modi and CM Nitish Kumar for their support.
He said, “The Centre has allocated Rs 1,261 crore under the national agriculture development scheme to promote drones in farming,” he stated. The minister announced plans to distribute drones to all 101 sub-divisions and willing farmers during 2024-25, offering a 60% subsidy or up to Rs 3.5 lakh per drone. Additionally, financial assistance for pesticide spraying will cover 50% of the service fee or Rs 240 per acre”.
State agriculture secretary Sanjay Kumar Agrawal emphasised the benefits of drones, which include pesticide spraying, soil testing, crop monitoring, and reduced labor costs.
“Under this initiative, women are also being trained as drone pilots,” he added.
The program will operate on a public-private partnership (PPP) model to ensure accessibility and affordability.
However, even as technological advancements are being embraced, Bihar’s agriculture faces severe challenges, particularly in Mokama Tal, known as the state’s pulses bowl. Mokama Tal, a natural water conservation zone fed by the Ganga River, has been grappling with persistent waterlogging issues. While the introduction of drones promises a modern solution to many agricultural challenges, addressing the waterlogging in Mokama Tal remains a pressing issue.
The state government’s initiatives must, therefore, strike a balance between leveraging technology and resolving longstanding natural and infrastructural challenges to ensure sustainable agriculture in Bihar.
