20 Dec 2024, Aizawl | ANN: In a landmark initiative to strengthen potato cultivation and mitigate the persistent shortage of quality seeds, Mizoram Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare Minister P.C. Vanlalruata inaugurated the state’s first aeroponic system for potato seed production on Thursday. Located at the agriculture farm in Thingdawl, Kolasib district, the Rs. 1.98 crore project is set to modernize agricultural practices in the region. The facility was established by Ludhiana-based Blue Stallion Equipment (P) Ltd.
The project, fully funded by the North Eastern Council (NEC), is designed to meet the demand for potato seeds during the sowing season.
According to Deputy Director of the Agriculture Department, Samuel Lalliansanga, the aeroponic system is expected to produce 2.5 lakh mini tubers (potato seeds) per season.
How It Works
In the innovative aeroponic system, potato plants are first developed in a tissue culture laboratory. These plants are then transferred to a specialized unit where their roots are suspended in air and sprayed with a nutrient-rich mist. Unlike traditional methods, this system eliminates the need for soil and maximizes efficiency in limited spaces.
“The initiative not only addresses seed shortages but also introduces sustainable farming techniques, ensuring higher production,” explained Lalliansanga.
A Significant Milestone for Mizoram
Mizoram currently imports approximately 90% of its potato supply from other states. This dependency on imports has long been a challenge for local farmers. The aeroponic system aims to reduce this reliance by producing high-quality seeds locally.
This initiative is expected to empower farmers, enhance self-reliance, and mark a new chapter in the state’s agricultural development. With the integration of advanced technologies like aeroponics, Mizoram is poised to transform its potato farming sector and pave the way for sustainable agricultural practices.
What is Aeroponics?
Aeroponics is a cutting-edge agricultural technique that grows plants without soil. In this system, roots are suspended in air and nourished with a fine mist of water and nutrients. Unlike hydroponics, where roots are submerged in a nutrient solution, aeroponics optimizes resource use and enhances plant growth.
This forward-looking approach is a game changer for Mizoram, setting a benchmark for other regions to follow in adopting modern farming solutions.
