Bidar, 15 Dec 2025 (ANN): The Karnataka Pradesh Krishik Samaj (KPKS) has urged the State government to take a decision during the ongoing Winter Session of the Legislature on upgrading the existing Diploma Agriculture College in Bidar into a degree-level agricultural college.
Accordig to the news pulished in The Hindu, KPKS Bidar district president Siddaramaiah Swamy said that a memorandum had earlier been submitted to Minister for Agriculture N. Cheluvarayaswamy, requesting him to raise the issue during the Winter Session and bring it to the notice of the government for an early decision.
Mr. Swamy said Bidar district is largely dependent on agriculture, with farmers cultivating nearly 52 different crops through inter-cropping and mixed-cropping practices. The district receives an average annual rainfall of about 850 mm and has fertile soil and a climate conducive to agricultural education and research.
At present, students from Bidar have to travel nearly 250 km to pursue degree courses in agriculture at institutions under the University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS), Raichur. This poses a major challenge for students from poor and rural backgrounds, he said.
Though Bidar does not have a degree-level agricultural college, it already houses a Krishi Vigyan Kendra and an Agricultural Research Station, which are actively supporting farmers through research and extension activities. With limited industrial opportunities in the district, many youths continue to depend on agriculture for livelihood. Upgrading the diploma college into a degree institution would help strengthen agricultural education and create better opportunities for local students, he added.
