Bengaluru, 21 April 2025 (ANN): The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has estimated wheat production in eight major wheat-growing states of India to be 122.724 million tonnes as of March 31, 2025. This assessment was made using satellite data under the Comprehensive Remote Sensing Observation on Crop Progress (CROP) framework developed by ISRO’s National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC).
CROP enables near real-time monitoring of crop sowing and harvesting during the Rabi season using satellite data from EOS-04, EOS-06, and Resourcesat-2A. The states covered include Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Bihar, Gujarat, and Maharashtra.
As of March 31, the wheat sown area is 330.8 lakh hectares, aligning closely with government estimates. ISRO used crop simulation models integrating sowing dates, crop area, and in-season crop conditions to arrive at the production figure, aiming to improve accuracy and support scalable agricultural planning.
