First International Agro biodiversity Congress to kick off tomorrow

First ever, 1st International Agro biodiversity Congress – IAC2016 will kick off tomorrow in New Delhi. The four day event will be held from 6-9 Nov 2016 at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi. Over 900 delegates from 60 countries will be participating in it and discuss the role of every stakeholder, including farmers, in the management of agro biodiversity and conservation of genetic resources. The event is being co-organized by Indian Society of Plant Genetic Resources and Bioversity International, a CGIAR Research Center headquartered in Rome, Italy. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Congress.

Agricultural biodiversity or agro biodiversity is the foundation of sustainable agricultural development and is an essential natural resource to ensure food and nutrition security. India has 2.4 % of world’s total land but is a home to 7-8% of all recorded species including over 45000 species of plants and 91000 species of animals.
