New Delhi, 21 April 2025 (ANN): Dr. Mangi Lal Jat, a renowned agronomist with over 25 years of experience in agricultural research and innovation, officially took charge on Monday as the Secretary of the Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE) and Director General (DG) of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR).
According to an official statement from the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, “The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) last week named Dr. Jat as the new Secretary of DARE and Director General of ICAR for a period of three years.”
“His appointment is expected to catalyze a new era of innovation, sustainability, and farmer-first research within ICAR and the broader agricultural ecosystem,” the ministry added.
Before assuming this new role, Dr. Jat served as Deputy Director General (Research) and Director of the Global Research Program at the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), Hyderabad.
An alumnus of ICAR–Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), New Delhi, Dr. Jat holds a Ph.D. in Agronomy, with a specialization in soil moisture conservation in rain-fed pearl millet—a vital area for ensuring food security in India’s arid regions.
