Thiruvananthapuram, 29 November 2025 (ANN): A two-day International Seminar on Climate-weed interactions: strategies for sustainable agriculture (CWIS 2025) was held at the College of Agriculture, Vellayani, bringing together experts to discuss the growing impact of climate change on weed dynamics and crop productivity.
Inaugurating the event, B. S. Chauhan, noted weed science expert from the University of Queensland, Australia, observed that India faces nearly $11 billion in annual crop losses due to weeds, a burden further intensified by changing climatic conditions.
Jacob John, Dean of Kerala Agricultural University, who presided over the inaugural session, emphasised the need for urgent and adaptive weed management approaches in the context of climate variability.
As part of the programme, the Agroclimatic Analysis Report of Vellayani (1983–2024) was released.
Over the two days, the seminar featured technical sessions, oral presentations, and poster exhibitions covering a range of themes including AI-driven weed detection, UAV-based precision herbicide application, IoT-enabled nutrient management, invasive weed behaviour, and climate-resilient integrated weed management strategies.
