Agri Minister calls for making Agriculture – Process and Product Oriented

501 students become agriculture graduates at KAU

In convocation 2017 of Kerala Agricultural University (KAU) on Thursday, the Agri Minister V S Sunil Kumar urged young graduates to take up the task of transforming agriculture from being production oriented to process and product oriented, and to maintain balance between agriculture and environment. He also called for modernizing agriculture using innovation, scientific knowledge, and creative thinking.

501 students were conferred upon the graduate degrees at the convocation ceremony. Meritorious students in various courses were also awarded medals and certificates. K.P. Sudheer, the first KAU scientist to become ICAR national fellow, was also honoured at the function.

Addressing the students, the minister said, “The future of agriculture lies in the efficient use of depleting natural resources such as land, water and energy. Kerala aims to adopt ‘Good Agricultural Practices’ and shift from chemically-intensive agriculture to promoting total organic farming.”

KAU’s Intellectual Property Rights Cell is currently studying traditional farming methods of tribals of Thayannankudy near Munnar to find out the ways to to conserve traditional farming crops and farming practices of the tribal population.

Narendra Singh Rathore, Deputy Director General (Education), Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) said, “ As India is becoming more vulnerable to climate change,  therefore the situation warrants technological interventions of advanced nature”.

Vice Chancellor P. Rajendra also addressed the students and highlighted the achievements of KAU in education, research and extension.
