India has praised its efforts towards for security during COVID 19 pandemic on the first day of the 35th Asia-Pacific regional Conference (APRC) of Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nation organized by Royal Government of Bhutan. Government delegates from 46 FAO Member Nations from Asia-Pacific region are participating in the 4 day virtual conference (1-4 September) to closely examine the present situation of the region’s food security in relation to the COVID 19 pandemic and its impact on food systems region-wide.
“India’s delegation told that Country’s response to the pandemic was exemplary”, said the press release from FAO.
Dr Alka Bhargava, Additional Secretary with Department of Agriculture said, “Indian government had taken prompt measures to mitigate the impacts of pandemic which coincided with Rabi harvesting.”
She also emphasized that the government’s initiative to bring three legislations has helped in decongesting the market.
Jong-Jin Kim, Assistant Director-General and FAO Regional Representative for Asia and the Pacific said, “We must find new ways to move forward and ensure sustainable food security in the face of these twin pandemics of COVID 19 and hunger, as well as prepare for threats that can and will evolve in the future.”
Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar will address the conference tomorrow.
